When I was studying for an English language module in my degree I was fascintated about word origins. Coming from the Lake District originally I have a number of dialect words that I still use today that are from Anglo Saxon and Viking origin. I also recently learnt that one of the oldest words pre-dating Anglo Saxon is a Celtic word - Brock (Broc) - badger.
