Video – a powerful communication & educational tool

As a podcast producer I have to admit the latest news of the continuing growth of online video is music to my ears or is that visuals for my eyes? The latest research is that every minute of every day 24 hours worth of content is uploaded to YouTube and 1 billion views of video content happen daily!

For the past few years I have been encouraging organisations to look at the value of video for both internal and external communications.

Here are some of the most popular applications that I know people are using video for:

  • Employee education and training
  • Employee and team showcasing – who are they, what do they do type videos for rest of staff
  • Business partner education and training (resellers and distributors)
  • Employee updates and meetings (management communication)
  • Events recording – for internal and external use
  • Corporate/Business info – a video ‘brochure’ showing the company, history and products/services
  • Corporate Social Responsibility – internal employee education and external CSR-PR
  • Product launches and promotion – for internal and external use including PR
  • Marketing – regular news and information updates, product information,  experts showcasing, client testimonials, client case studies/product in action
  • WebVideo – general information and process support to help customers use of web site for orders, help/support and e-commerce (especially when used with iForms interactively with ‘pop-up’ video help)
  • Customer Service and Support – internal training and external FAQ video-shorts

BBC iPlayer – exceeds 100m downloads for Dec 2009

Interesting report from informitv about the BBCs iPlayer having had over 100m downloads for two months running (November and December 2009). This is over a 50% increase on the same period 12 months ago.

This increased use (as well as similar ones for YouTube and other platforms)  shows citizens demand for web based video is continuing to grow. Smartphones like the Apple iPhone, which allow mobile consumption of video, can only increase demand as well as creation.

Organisations looking at what social media tools to use to build and engage with online communities should be factoring in the use of video.
